The last performance bastion for AMD?

It's no secret that AMD is looking to release an update to its nine-month-old Radeon HD 4870 line in the very near future, but the fastest card remains - and will remain for some time, it seems - the Radeon HD 4870 X2.
In the face of an ever-decreasing pound that has seen prices of electrical goods actually go up in recent months, the X2 variant has remained steady at around 340. Expensive, yes, but still cheaper than the 400+ GeForce GTX 295.
XFX, recently manufacturing for both camps, reckons that its X2 is a good deal, shipping at around 340. Let's find out.
